Scares in high school! A review of MONSTER HIGH: NEW SCAREMESTER

Welcome boils and ghouls as we talk about a series in a setting that is most dreadful! The one and only high school. But besides the tests and homework that provide the most frights we mind our monster boys and girls in for trying to balance the monster realm, human realm, and relationships.

In this collection of stories and issues we find the girls of monster high in a new semester but with many battle wounds from previous events. Ghouls getting kidnap, Draculaura filling in for her now deceased father as school board head and still dealing with interaction from the human world. And just as all these hectic things start to take shape it’s when the free spirit and zombie Ghoulia gets kidnapped that the plans of a more sinister event begin to take root that just may threaten the very existence as we know it!

This was a first time reading for me as I have not partaken in the series before, though I really like the plot development. It reminds me a lot of newer and more modern Archie where we get a nice bit of daily teenage drama, romance, and some clever ghoulish puns. On the flipside though we get a very mature look at family dynamic and stress, finding the courage to love and be open and even living to be happy and not to uphold a certain image we believe is needed. It’s a great book for fans of the series and the younger crowd but as an older reader I can appreciate the real-world reciprocity!

So, if you’re looking for a fun haunt with some old fashion fun and plot with a new style scare, I can say this will be right up your alley on the next full moon.
